Henk Gorter

Henk Petrus Gorter was born in Sneek, Friesland, in 1908. He was a Dutch painter known for his versatile and colorful body of work that spanned impressionistic landscapes, portraits, still life painting, and figurative scenes. Gorter spent much of his early life in the northern province before moving to Amsterdam around 1951 at the age of 43. There, he trained as a drawing teacher at the National Institute for the Training of Art Teachers and pursued further studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts (Rijksacademie). This late start in formal artistic education marked a turning point, allowing him to dedicate himself fully to painting. Gorter’s style was notably diverse: he moved fluidly between loose, impressionistic brushwork, near-surrealistic elements, and more abstract compositions.

What unified his oeuvre was a bold and joyful use of color, often celebrating the vibrancy of nature, which frequently took center stage in his landscapes and outdoor scenes. His subjects ranged from intimate still life paintings and characterful portraits to lively beach scenes and figures. Gorter’s work is appreciated for its expressive freedom and stylistic variety, reflecting a painter who embraced experimentation throughout his relatively short but dedicated career. His paintings continue to appear in galleries and auctions, offering collectors a glimpse into mid-20th-century Dutch artistic diversity. He was an active member of the Vereniging Sint Lucas and the Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (BBK) in Amsterdam. Later in life, he settled in Gelderland, where he continued creating until his death in Renkum in 1974 at the age of 66.
