An outstanding oil painting executed with thick use of paint capturing a luminous sight of the Locks at Devon, England, with the speckled water glistening below. Homes from the village are depicted in the distance, and we can feel that a mood is set, as the sky is a soft blue with puffed, weighted clouds in the daylight. Overall, this painting glorifies the early 20th Century, while Lever was on his travels through Europe at the time of his career. A truly "Ahead of its time" piece, as this impressionistic piece was executed in 1903, during the turn of the Century. With beautiful brushwork and strong contrasting colors, this is the finest work done with rich colors of cobalt blue, Mars black, and pops of bright whites and raw umbers throughout. The piece is signed by the artist lower left, and it comes housed in a period giltwood French-style frame with original nameplate affixed on the bottom center and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
Condition: With ordinary wear from age and some light scattered craquelure, it comes displayed in an antique frame that shows some ordinary wear from age and minor imperfections in line with the manufacturing period (please see listing pictures for details).
